Character's Personal History:
Dustin was born in 383 AC, the fourth son of Lord Byren Royce. To say that greatness was expected of him from an early age as the youngest of four boys would be an understatement; his eldest brother a proficient commander and Hand of the King, the second eldest famed Knight of the Bloody Gate, and his third brother regarded as a golden paragon of knighthood. He from a young age to always reach beyond his grasp, that goals should be grand enough to get the best of you. Man's reach did not exceed his grasp, his grasp exceeds his nerve. He was expected to make a mark upon the world with blood sweat and tears, etching it like the runes upon his father's bronze armor. So he strove to work his way of his brothers' shadows, following the strong tradition of knighthood in the Vale, rivaled only by that of the Reach. His practice bordered on obsession, the lad known to set up quintain courses for miles along the Vale of Arryn, complete with mannequins, suspended rings of varying sizes, and challenging other targets for his lance. If he missed a single one in a run at the course, he would start from the beginning, running it over and over until perfection was achieved, before having the course randomized the next day and repeating it all again.
He squired for his brother, Ser Donnel the Golden, famed as a paragon of knightly virtues. The pair road out with the Knights of the Vale, Dustin cutting his teeth slaying Mountain Clansmen, moving targets suitable target practice for furthering his skill with his lance. The honorable Donnel always allowed quarter and refused to run down fleeing foes. While commendable, one day this cost him his life, cut down in battle by men he had likely let run off to lick their wounds before, the just reward in this world for honor. When he fell, it was Dustin that took charge and fended off the wildings, wheeling his steed between his body and the clansmen, seeing his brother's corpse returned to Runestone rather than looted by savages. He was knighted for his efforts, though the circumstances left a bitter taste in his mouth. He realized honor was not a strength, but a weakness, touted by men who followed not men who excelled. Men who exceeded their grasp were not bound by moral qualms or misgivings. Resolution required sacrifice. So it was that he took up his fallen brother's role, bringing the fury of Runestone upon the mountain clans. He gave no quarter, road down the fleeing, and made sure his lance struck true time and time again. In honor of his dedication to the task, his father had a bronze mace forged for him, etched with runes like those in the heirloom armor.
Having achieved the most he felt he could in the Vale, Ser Dustin sought to make a name for himself in the realm. He traveled from tourney to tourney, a frequent champion in the lists. He often left such events with a winner's purse and no shortage of maidenheads. It was at one such tourney that he set eyes upon Lady Triss Baratheon, the heir to Storm's End. Unfortunately, she was betrothed to the widowed Lord Buckler, her father's trusted marshal and adviser, promised her hand with the expectation he would protect her claim. It was love (or lust) at first sight, the half-dornish beauty unlike any woman the Valeman had met before. Her promised status may have discouraged most men, a prize outside his grasp, but Ser Dustin Royce was not most men and had learned already that nothing was outside the grasp of a man with few qualms. Rumors soon began of secret dalliances between the pair, though they were never proven. As fate (or a bribe) would have it, Ser Dustin eventually came across Lord Buckler on the lists. A thunderous charge ended with Lord Buckler in the sand, a shard of lance lodged through the slit in his visor into his eye and deep into his brain. He was dead before he hit the ground. The judges ruled it a terrible accident, as the precision required to intentionally land such a blow would have necessitated practice bordering on obsession. Ser Dustin certainly seemed contrite, paying a sizable stipend from his collected tourney winnings to Buckler's heirs. Nonetheless, he and Triss were married only a month later. It had not taken much to convince Lord Baratheon, irate as he was at Lord Buckler's demise. The marriage gave his house a capable commander, skilled warrior, and an alliance with the Vale to defend his daughter's claim.
The happy pair have since had 3 children and Lord Dustin Baratheon has busied himself putting his efforts into expanding and improving the Stormlands cavalry, striving to make their knights the equal of those in the Reach and Vale.
